This doesn't mean that you need to quit your job. Just do not get boxed in as single purpose developer.

It is important not to be just a developer of one kind. Do not just be a PHP Developer, DotNet Developer, or a SQL Developer. Strive to be more than what you are currently doing.

As an example; when I was just starting out as a developer I had two unique jobs. First job was a Visual COBOL Developer and the second job was a Factory Automation Integrator specializing in database and Visual Basic integrations to Allen-Bradley PLC. If I had allowed myself to be boxed into either one of these developer types, I would not have had the opportunities to do more. With the Factory Automation Integrator, I would probably be pumping gas as the firms I used to work for and see around are mostly gone now and who the heck is using Visual COBOL anymore?

As a Web Developer working for a web development firm, you may be asked by a customer to do a mobile application or a windows application to complement their other work you may have done.

I strive every day to learn something new. I learn it until I know it well enough to be productive. I also practice what I have learned in the projects I work on in my spare time. .

In my current job I am a Web Developer, SQL Developer, Windows Developer, Mobile Developer and a Support Specialist. I have also worked where I had a single focus as a Web Developer at a web development firm, but I stretched myself to do business needs analysis. It is important to be forever evolving as a developer. Just don't speak of the new technologies. Learn the new technologies and know and practice what have you have learned.

Eleven Items That Makes a Developer Great

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; How is it down now?
2. Ask about rounding rules?
3. Ask if they do it by weight or size or both?
4. Ask if there is a matrix of postal codes?
5. Where do they get their rates?
Remember; they really do not care how you will program it. They just want it usable and for it to function correctly. Take your notes and ask your questions. Take everything back to your office and transform the details into a project and programming plan. Write out the formulas, draw out your user interface and write out your timelines for approval.

How to Act?
Do not get frustrated. Remember they are just as confused by you at you are of them. It is not their specialty to be technology. Treat them as a customer; it will help you respect them. Make lots of notes and repeat back to them what you hear. Use non-offensive language and body gestures. Sometimes drawing pictures will help both parties to understand.

The Lost 1984 Video - Steve Jobs Introduces The Mac

Original URL: http://www.businessinsider.com/video-steve-jobs-introduces-mac-2011-8

What is Leadership

A leader is a person who helps drive a group of people to a set goal. Twitter allows you to search for trends, get live data, create lists and organize. Using sites like Hootsuite and TweetDeck, you can monitor more than one social media outlet. By organizing your live feeds, you can keep your more relevant data at the forefront.

There is so much more to Social Media, but it is mostly in how you use it. It can distract just as easy as be a positive tool. You must decide what you need at the end of the day and keep your focus. Do not allow yourself to get sucked into social media overload and addictions. By keeping your focus, you can empower your web presence and drive people to your office, storefront and website.

Importance of Downtime

Everyone always say they are too busy for time off. Some people say that you should not have as much time of as you do. If I did not take my vacation that I am allowed, I could not be as productive. Some of my best creativity and thoughts come as I am off on vacation. Yes; time of means no work, but I still take a notepad with me. I am constantly writing down ideas and drawing out user interfaces. It doesn't matter if I am laying at the beach or relaxing at home, there is always a notepad beside me. It is downtime that helps my creative juices be released. Everyday while I am at work, I am too busy to do anything other than what needs to be done; there is no time for creativity.

Downtime is also good for balance. You need time away from the stresses and time with the family and friends. It is important to do things that take you out of the ordinary routine of your busy life. Today I took my family to the Toronto Zoo. The smiles and giggles were unending and the memories will carry me into the next month easily. The family grounded me and brought me back to state of normality.

Can you keep working everyday for an entire year with a week off? Not likely a person; who works 9 - 5 or more in a 6 - 7 day per week in a job will never be productive, friendly, patient or creative. You need the break; you really do. In the computer field, you should have a minimum 2 -3 weeks off; 3 - 4 is ideal as you have put your years in. If your company tries to deny you a proper break or vacation, you may want to re-think your priorities. You need the balance and a chance to recharge your brain and energy.

When applying for a job; vacation has been a sticking point for negations. I believe I need 3 - 4 weeks and would rather compromise on other items. I have been a developer since 1996, and I do a great job, but I need my vacation. I need the balance and so do you. Take your breaks, ask for your vacations and live a more balanced life.

Downtime equals productivity and happiness

Creativity and Love Flows in London

London Ontario boasts creativity and cutting edge ideas with companies like rTraction, Voices.com, Echidna and many others. These companies are bleeding edge when it comes to employee management, project management and their technologies and methodologies. I have seen many good things come from these companies and believe London Ontario should be applauded for its support in the technology sector.

Between foosball, MeetUps, OpenData and the UnLab activities, these companies share a bond, that only the technology world can understand. These companies together will put London Ontario on the same playing field with other technology centres of Ontario, Canada and the rest of the world. Socially London tech companies are more advanced. They see the trends and move with and ahead of them at a rapid pace.

I have also noticed a new trend of technology companies in London also getting actively involved social causes, like reforesting, helping homeless, helping students, garbage clean-up and much more. These people and organizations love London, they love Ontario and they love Canada. Even politics tend to be a centre point of beliefs and passions for employees and leaders of the tech community.

Now, I have mentioned the tech companies, but it is not without the employees, will these companies advance on to the world stage. The employees are the heart and soul of the companies that support the leaders of these companies. These employees are independently trying new ideas and concepts through the support of their employers. These people are truly amazing with their talents. London has some of the best technology employees around.

Aaron McGowan, is another person to be watching who makes up our community. Aaron is a champion for OpenData which is a moving trend with our local governments to share data with the development world. He is full of passion to have more data open to everyone to use and develop software freely.

Applaud the tech community, join in the social movements and hug a geek today. It is not without each other can we move forward to do even greater things.

What are you bringing to your team

Every team has a slacker. Your team can be at work, on the rink, ball diamond, or your marriage. Are you the slacker? Why are you the slacker? Are you listening to people other than yourself?

Everyone has the ability to listen to themselves, but are you listening to others. If you are not listening, you are probably not contributing to your team fully. Your team needs you. It is not about your needs ( well may be a little ). If you make it more about your team, you will be a better person and team player.

There are various reasons that you may not be bringing enough to your team:

You may not be aware. Try listening

Your skills may not be up to snuff. Although I am Andrew Pallant; I find this question very complex and complicated to answer. One must reflect ever so often to rediscover who you are and what you are doing. As I was caught off guard by the question, I had to pause and think. This was hard. Can you answer the question freely?

Here is a series of questions to ask yourself:

Who is <<yourname>>?</yourname>

What am I doing?

Am I adding value to my life?

Am I adding value to others?

What are my current goals in my personal life and professional life?

Am I completing my goals?

Here is my answer that I had given to the person who asked: "Who is Andrew Pallant?".

Andrew is a proud father of 2 children. I am a confident person who works hard. Whenever I am given a task or take on a task, I give 120% of myself. I never take short cuts. When I manage or lead a team, I am firm, fair and open to new ideas. I do not like to miss deadlines, but if I do, there must be a really good reason. I am friendly, generally fun, and always sincere. When I am on a team, I listen to others, and try to learn from them. I am continuously learning and listening as I believe no one can know everything.

Now I am currently reflecting on who I am and what I am doing. We are the one group of people that the junior developer can turn to after college. Essentially the college gave the new developer 2 years of education, a piece of paper and tossed them out to sink or swim.

I personally do not like to see anyone sink. I believe no matter what the skill set is, a person could be a little better if a helping hand is given. I am not suggesting a babysitter, as no one really wants that. I am suggesting an open door, an open mind and a little patience. Juniors will make mistakes and they will often be a little cocky thinking they know it all coming out of school, but we need to remember their minds are still in the stage of learning.

Juniors can learn much more at their stage in life. Their minds are like sponges and soak in the good and bad habits and knowledge that we share with them. The best thing we can do for them is to teach them everything we know, encourage them to do extra learning on their own and to listen to them. When I last managed a small team, I asked for a weekly report, which consisted of:

1. What are they working on?
2. Where are they on the schedule of tasks?
3. What obstacle have then encountered? Are they still stuck, if not how did they over come it?
4. What is one thing they learned new this week?

During our weekly meeting, I would get one or two of the developers to talk about either the obstacle or their new found knowledge with the rest of the team. This way all new and old developers had a chance to share and learn from each other.

In summary, help them learn in every aspect. Listen to their ideas and new found knowledge. Have an open door for questions. Lastly; be cautious of your bad habits.
<img tasks a person could do in their first two weeks as a new Project or Team Manager. I have isolated some of the more important tasks that need to be addressed in the first two weeks of starting the new position. Mind you these can vary depending on the size of team and the discussions with your new superior.

Discuss your role and management styles with new superior. Ensure you are both on the same page.

Become intimate with company policies

Get to know everyone on the team including their name, responsibilities
and what they have done in the past

Review all project descriptions and time lines

Find out what each team member is currently working on and where they are in the time lines

Compare where each team member is at on the time lines with the actual time line

Discuss progress with My Boss

Team Meeting

discuss priorities

discuss what everyone's expectation is.

discuss what I expect of them

ideas to get the projects back on track

look for team suggestions

Discuss progress with my superior

Meet with each member
Recycling and Trash Ideas

I had just watched Trashopolis on the National Geographic Channel; it featured Paris France. On it they showed the history of excess trash and how Paris overcame it. From the principal of rag pickers, they created city sponsored enterprises. Back in the 1800's a rag picker would be a person or persons who who would pick through trash, fix or clean items and resell the items at flee markets.

With the city sponsored enterprises, the entrepreneurs would run a depot where citizens would drop of batteries, old appliances, clothing and other items. The depots would then clean, fix or re-purpose the items for donation or resale. This seems to be cutting down on garbage, increasing recycling efforts and ultimately saving the city from garbage. As an added bonus, the people running the depots run routes that would allow them to pick up items from vendors, shop owners and households. I can really see the benefits here.

London Ontario every year discuss what they can do to save trash costs, increase recycling efforts and work on new contracts with garbage collectors. Not once I had heard of the idea of a city sponsored enterprise being setup to fix, clean and re-purpose items for resale or donations. This would also help the city encourage entrepreneurship, increase arts and crafts and hit the international stage for becoming more Green.

I think for thing to work, the city would only have to find a person to run things, donate a building and help build a business plan for the person to start. This would be a great venture for a young person with a basic knowledge of electronics and business, recruit some local artists to help re-purpose items and you could have a good little business helping the city to become more green.

May be worth while sending a small team of business and city officials to places like Paris who seemingly are doing things a little better.
<img width='1' height='1' Tech savvy users often use social media to stay informed, collaborate and to broaden the colleague base. Often business owners will make policies that make using social media websites an outlawed activity without any thought of why their Information Technology department would use it. Employers often believe that using social media sites will decrease the amount of work that one can get done in a day. It can also be believed that they are risking the loss of an employee to another company, should that employee network properly. Although employee poaching is a possibility, it is unlikely if the employee is satisfied.

Why do I use social media websites? I use social media sites to ask for help from other professionals, be in the know of events, and know about new technologies and to help mentor juniors that do not work directly with me in me field of work. Without the social media sites, I would be limited who I could ask for advice from and I would not be as educated in what I do. Every day I pick up at least one new technique from my social media channels. Today's graduates that are using social media sites are often bubbling with knowledge through their blogs and other forums. I use my Google reader RSS feeds and my Twitter as a daily technology newspaper.

Some social media sites I use are:

Twitter - Short instant messaging between users

Google+ - Social media channels, organizer and broadcaster

Facebook - Social media channels, organizer and broadcaster

LinkedIn - Professional Social Media channels, organizer and broadcaster

Blogger - Tool to be used for personal journalism

Paper.li - Consolidate Twitter and Facebook information into a newspaper format

BufferApp.com - Schedules Tweets to send to twitter.

HootSuite - Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook feed reader.

Yes, it is true that social media can be abused. Users can post to often and about inappropriate things. Knowing your boss or family could be reading what you post, you should probably not post about going to work with hangovers, your bad dates (or an dates) or you interview that are going to or had. Always think your social posts can directly how people portray you. If you are posting every five minutes during the day when you should be working, probably means you are getting nothing done.

To know how effective you social media, you need to subscribe to metric sites. While there are lots of services popping up every day, you need to make sure the data they are providing is accurate and useful. On my radar right now is www.Klout.com. I like Klout because they publish how their metrics work, their graphs are easy to read and they watch more than one site. They are by no means perfect, but they give me a pretty good idea of where I sit. It is important to know your broadcast range, the number of republishing posts and acknowledges and it is important to know what topics you are known for.

What do the social media sites get out of their services being free to us? They get advertisements to the masses, but not in an annoying way. They gear the advertisements to what you are talking about and what you are interested in. They also get data sources of what is popular, trending and new. We as the social media users essentially build their businesses. get data sources of what is popular, trending and new.
